The Penguin: Bliss Explained

Explore Victor Aguilar’s game-changing decision in The Penguin Episode 3. Actor Rhenzy Feliz dives into his character’s complex relationship with Oz, power dynamics,

The third episode of The Penguin, titled “Bliss,” focuses heavily on Victor Aguilar (played by Rhenzy Feliz), the teenager whom mobster Oz Cobb (portrayed by Colin Farrell) has hired as his driver. Victor didn’t have much of a say in the matter — after accidentally witnessing Oz murder Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen) at the start of the series, he was forced to help dispose of the body. Despite having every reason to eliminate Victor, Oz spared the young man’s life, and since then, an unusual relationship has developed between them. While the two have grown closer, Victor has secretly been plotting his escape, unsure if the gangster life is what he really wants. By the end of “Bliss,” however, Victor abandons his plans to leave and instead returns to Oz’s side.

“There are so many reasons to leave, but the reason I think he stays back is that Oz has introduced him to a new world that honestly — maybe he doesn’t want to say it out loud — is a bit exciting,” Feliz shared in an interview with TV Guide. “There’s power in it, and there’s money in it. Money’s a big motivating factor for many, many people.”

Victor’s past experiences shed light on his motivations. A flashback in the episode reveals that he grew up in Crown Point, one of Gotham’s impoverished neighborhoods, and struggled to make ends meet. In one scene, he complains to his father about being underpaid, a sentiment that highlights the stark contrast between his previous lifestyle and his current situation under Oz’s wing. Not only does he now have access to wealth and power, but he’s also found someone who sees potential in him — something he rarely saw in himself.

“Oz gives him these opportunities,” Feliz explained about Victor’s decision to stay. “He’s looking at what his life would be like if he doesn’t go down this path, and I don’t think he likes that road.”

Victor’s relationship with Oz is complex and layered, defined by a mix of fear, fascination, and a growing respect. While he initially viewed Oz as just another ruthless criminal, he now sees him as a mentor figure — someone who believes in his abilities and wants him to thrive in this dangerous world.

Why Victor Chooses the Dark Path

Victor’s hesitation to walk away from Oz is rooted not just in material gain, but also in a sense of belonging and purpose. Growing up in a tough neighborhood like Crown Point, opportunities were few and far between. Now, for the first time, Victor is experiencing the thrill of power, money, and recognition, even if it comes at a steep price. Oz, a cold and calculating mob boss, surprisingly becomes the one person who truly invests in Victor’s growth and success. This newfound sense of empowerment complicates Victor’s desire to escape.

The Allure of Power and Wealth

Rhenzy Feliz highlights that, despite the obvious dangers of staying in Oz’s orbit, Victor is tempted by the lifestyle that comes with being associated with a figure like Oz. “It’s a dangerous game, but it’s also enticing,” Feliz noted. “Victor sees a version of himself that’s much more powerful, much more in control. And that’s hard to give up, especially for someone who’s always felt powerless.”

    What’s Next for Victor?

With his decision to stay, Victor seems to be stepping into the gangster world with both feet, abandoning his previous life and embracing his role under Oz. The real question now is: how far will Victor go to prove himself, and what will be the consequences of his allegiance? As The Penguin progresses, audiences are sure to witness Victor’s internal struggle as he continues to navigate his complicated relationship with Oz.
